When you want to record sound from your PC, and just can't get seem to get it right, take a look at the Advanced Volume Control in Windows. This quick tutorial will get you recording like a pro in no time. It's as simple as tweaking the right settings, but which ones?

Here's how:

  • Launch the Windows Volume Control by double clicking the speaker icon in your task bar.
  • Make sure that "Advanced Controls" is checked under "Options" in the menu tab, and select Properties.
  • Now tell Windows to display the recording settings, by choosing "Recording" under the section labeled "Adjust volume for"
  • Check all the appropriate input devices, like your microphone, and click OK.

Volume Control Properties

  • Make sure your microphone isn't muted, and raise the volume level to about 75%.
  • Fine tuning of volume levels should be completed with the help of recording software, which will allow you to maximize record levels without clipping.
